The Names on the Memorial
“The Names on the Memorial” documents the lives of 31 men from a remote Highland community who lost their lives in the service of their country during World Wars One and Two. Although coming from Waternish, a tiny peninsula in the northwest part of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, these 31 men served across the globe in every theatre of war.
Aside from the detailed war histories of each man there is – alongside – each man’s family and community history as well. The whole book captures the small crofting community’s culture from the late 19th Century up to the present day and has over three hundred colour and black and white photographs in its 312 pages.
In A4 size, it’s a heavy paperback weighing 1.2 kg due to the high-quality gloss finish on the cover and pages.
Privately published, there is a short print run of 100 copies for those interested in military history, crofting history and the rich culture that runs deep through small communities in the Highlands of Scotland.
Originally published in May 2022 to help maintain the Waternish War Memorial, such has been the demand for copies thanks to the BBC and West Highland Free Press coverage that we are selling the book at its original price. It has shown to be extremely popular with those who may have ancestors from Scotland or who have an interest in military, crofting, seafaring and cultural histories.
All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to the maintenance of the Waternish War Memorial.
